The Lock Up - FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY

Fernando Do Campo

OPENING: Friday 5 February 2021. A limited number of attendees will be able to register for hourly time slots in accordance with COVID-19 government restrictions. We encourage all visitors to practice social distancing and register upon entry to the opening.

The exhibition FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY, explores the subjectivity, privilege and hidden cost of our safety. It considers our response when things push up against the limits of our control and the way fear can be leveraged for power, or used to justify actions that would normally be considered unethical.

The ideas and structures we habitually trust to underpin our sense of security, both as individuals and a nation, are deeply ingrained. Often there is an invisible balancing act when weighing up the perceived benefits of these versus the cost. The artworks brought together here not only illuminate some of the specific issues that arise out of this type of decision making, but draw attention to the grey areas and problematics of this security versus harm equation, unveiling something about our collective psychology in the process.

Including new commissions and site-specific iterations of existing works, FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY is curated by Halinka Orszulok and features artists Fernando do Campo, Heath Franco, Doug Heslop, Tracey Moffatt and Gary Hillberg, Halinka Orszulok, Shevaun Wright and Giselle Stanborough.
