Tarryn Gill selected for IOTA Residency

The Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA) has selected eight WA artists for two distinct residency and collaboration programs in India in October 2026 — one focused on craft knowledge-sharing in Delhi and Kutch, the other a collaborative installation project in West Bengal with artist Asim Waqif.

Four artists — Jenna Lee, Lilly Mae Kerley, Maxxi Minaxi May and Tarryn Gill — will travel to Delhi and Kutch as part of the Maitri Exchange, a program developed through IOTA’s partnership with WA-based curators Sharmila Wood and Zali Morgan with Indian curators Kallol Datta and Shaleen Wadhwana. The program centres on a craft gathering and symposium at Khoj International Artists’ Association in Delhi, followed by a research itinerary and engagement with artisan communities in Kutch through Shrujan LLDC.

A second group — Michael Barlow, Mike Bullock, Bjoern Rainer-Adamson and Monique Tippett — will travel to West Bengal to work alongside Delhi-based artist Asim Waqif on a large-scale participatory installation titled Cyclic / Handmade Future, planned for IOTA27 at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). The project uses bamboo, reclaimed materials and responsive digital systems to explore human creativity in a technological age. The West Bengal residency will coincide with the Durga Puja festival.

Both exchanges are supported by Creative Australia, the Centre for Australia-India Relations, and IOTA Ambassadors. IOTA27 is expected to take place in 2027.
