Marcelis enjoys working with ephemeral materials having completed substantial projects that employ water and light to create what she describes as moments of wonder. While by contrast more solid, her furniture design also emphasises pushing the limits of her materials and production capabilities in search of new fabrication possibilities.
Marcelis’s frequent use of resin highlights her attentive approach to the sensorial; the interplay between light and movement that lends her pieces their effect which is driven by user activation. The SOAP Table, is designed to take into consideration the sounds made during dining, with the softer materiality of resin dulling the noise of cutlery as it meets the table.
Her other works range from studies of the optical effects achieved by materials like resin or glass to large-scale installations, such as her iridescent sundial for watch brand A. Lange & Söhne, which combines geometric elements to shape colour through light.
