David Tate is a designer based in Perth, Western Australia, who seeks to continually challenge and transform ideas about furniture design.

Through his highly creative and transformative work, Tate’s practice evokes thought, tells stories, creates understanding, and celebrates existence.

Tate grew up in the town of Eganu in the Pinjarrega Nature Reserve. The reserve is renowned for its unique native wildflower species and emu breeding ground. The experience of living in bushland, surrounded by nature, has shaped Tate’s appreciation for colour and texture, structure and form, where purpose and function meet beauty.

Tate believes respect for material is crucial to good design; the beauty of the material’s character is the soul of the work and gives Tate the agency through which to bring storytelling and narrative into the objects he creates. Perhaps more importantly, Tate appreciates how texture is the extra dimension to captivate and intrigue.
