Australian artist Ivana Taylor creates tactile sculptures focused on the relationship between textiles and timber. With the genesis for each sculpture a watercolour, the artist translates the rhythmic free form into a three-dimensional artwork. Taylor plays with these relationships, distilling the process, texture and aesthetic qualities that have evolved from a long-standing fixation on wrapping. Her sculptures fascinate and intrigue through form and colour, which is furthered through shadow play. Taylor’s in-depth knowledge of fabric dying results in unique colour gradients that enhance the form.
After graduating from UNSW with a Bachelor of Design & Art Education (Hons), Taylor was accepted into the highly selective Associate Program at JamFactory, Adelaide, where she spent two years evolving her practice. Taylor has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, and her work is held in important private collections globally. In 2021, Taylor exhibited her first solo exhibition Reframe at the gallery.
Taylor has exhibited in Triennale Milano 2022, Lines of Affection, 2022; Powerhouse, New Australian Design, 2022-2023, Sydney Contemporary, 2024, 2023 and 2022; Melbourne Art Fair, 2024 and Melbourne Design Week 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020. Her work has been featured in Vault, Wallpaper* magazine’s Graduate Directory 2020, VL50 Vogue Living, Vogue Australia, Green magazine, The Local Project, Belle and Garland magazine. Taylor was among 20 emerging artists selected for the Discovered Project with The American Hardwoods Export Council and Wallpaper* Magazine in 2021, which was exhibited in the Design Museum, London. Taylor was a Finalist in the Clarence Prize in 2023.
