Tammy Kanat is a Melbourne-based fibre artist and weaver whose practice investigates colour, form and balance. Working primarily in wool, silk, and yarn, Kanat is well known for her intuitive, process-driven approach to weaving.

Having begun her career as a jewellery designer, Kanat transitioned to textiles after studying at the Australian Tapestry Workshop. She approaches each work with curiosity and playfulness, allowing intuition  and rhythm to guide each warp and weft. 

Kanat’s signature approach to colour and texture has developed over a decade of experimentation, including innovations such as rounded hand-made copper looms that allow her practice to move beyond the traditional squared boundaries of tapestry into more fluid, organic, and expansive forms.

Since joining the gallery in 2022, Kanat has completed significant private commissions and gallery presentations, including Sydney Contemporary Art Fair (2022 and 2024) and Melbourne Art Fair (2024) where she was awarded the Richard Parker Award. Kanat is currently presenting Circle of Her, a solo exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Australia, Melbourne. Kanat’s work is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
