CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert is thrilled to present with Design Miami, under the curatorial theme Blue Sky, for the 20th edition in Miami.
On the centenary of the Surrealist manifesto, the gallery followed a Blue Sky approach to dreaming an exciting realm of artistic and presentation possibilities to bring a selection of remarkable Australian designers to the U.S. from the other side of the world.
Even though Australia boasts one of the oldest continuing peoples on earth, it is at the same time one of the youngest. Design Miami provides a platform for culture to be placed at the forefront of our society and for Australia to be recognised for both its rich heritage and contemporary narratives.
For its debut presentation, Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert presents a diverse but complementary collection of work by significant, intergenerational designers from around Australia, including First Nation. The gallery’s curation challenged each artist or artistic couple to present highly refined design or object d’art through their unique Australian vernacular.
Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert brings a focused and thought-provoking presentation of the unique Australian environment, flora and fauna through design at a time when climate change has become visible. Each artist, or collaborative pair, explores Australia’s landscape as their inspiration to captivate and ask the viewer to engage, reflect and see the world through their work – placing a lens on and storytelling through their chosen material.
The artists are selected for their practice, working with either traditional or new and innovative techniques of making and storytelling to bring focus to the rich tapestry that characterises Australian design today. -
