Founding Creative Director of Iordanes Spyridon Gogos, Jordan Gogos, works across the disciplines of art, design, and fashion to test the possibilities and limits of their distinct categorisations and various associated technologies and media.
Gogos’ initial reckoning is with the exponential volume of stuff in the world. He works compulsively in order to find new functions and meanings for salvaged materials including dead-stock threads, fabrics, and donated clothing items. Gogos subjects these materials destined for landfill to an iterative cyclical process of doing and undoing in order to renew their functions and value. For Gogos, there is virtue in reprocessing things perceived to be unusable, which is potentially – and necessarily – endless.
Essential to Gogos’ open-ended enquiry is the agency of chance. He is constantly testing the limits of chosen materials and methodologies without prohibiting himself with predetermined outcomes. When experimenting with techniques and technologies, Gogos discovers unconventional methods for art-making and design with new-found purpose. It is this exploratory quality that imbues his creations with a compelling sense of variability. Gogos, thus, invites us to consider the very possibilities of sustainable reinvention.
For his Sydney Fashion Week runway, Gogos has conceived a stage set made entirely from disused textiles, which have been reworked and combined using a myriad of techniques including painting, embroidery, and patchwork. Threads and fabrics collected over time have been amalgamated into a single installation. Once the fashion show has ended and the set has performed its task, it will be divided into smaller components for secondary use – in this instance, prospective collectors will have the opportunity to acquire them, thus participating in the process of their renewal. Central to this repurposing is Gogo’s commitment to using existing materials and reducing landfill. The runway itself is also given a second life, extending its lifespan beyond the duration of the show.
