Editor of VAULT, Alison Kubler takes you through her top picks Sydney Contemporary Presents 2020
Hi
Sydney Contemporary, Australia's largest art fair, has announced that it has gone digital this year with Sydney Contemporary Presents 2020. The remarkable annual event will continue to offer a broad and diverse snapshot of 2020's creative landscape but this year via a custom designed website. The month-long event launches on 1 October, but I was fortunate to have a look at what Sydney Contemporary Presents 2020 has to offer and it is clear that the event continues to share a plethora of robust insights into artists' practices, the opportunity for you to buy meaningful work in an informed way, and bring together incredible artists from across Australasia. So with that in mind, here are my top 10 picks from Sydney Contemporary Presents 2020
SALLY SMART AT SALLY DAN CUTHBERT
With a practice that actively engages the global, the art historical and women artists, it is hard to go past Sally Smart. The artist who works with various materials and methods of construction, continues to offer playful yet uncanny hooks for exploring identity politics, the body, the home and history. Smart's now internationally recognised, large-scale cut-out assemblage installations - often made from felt, canvas and everyday fabrics - position texture, process, intervention and the surreal as the enduring tools for grappling with the contemporary moment.
