Excerpt form Hadara Magazine's 14th edition:
"Prayer rugs, too, are inspiring contemporary reimaginings. Sydney-based Pakistani artist Abdullah M. I. Syed began creating sculptural prayer rugs from decommissioned dollar bills while living in the US as a way of reflecting on the dominance of money in American culture. Whether folded into paper planes to form Islamic geometric patterns and hung in the air like flying carpets, or shredded and woven together with gold thread, US dollar and Pakistani rupee notes are transformed from currency into objects imbued with spiritual value."
Flying Rug X by Abdullah M.I. Syed is part of an ongoing exploration of contemporary art within the framework of migration, identity, and the movement of ideas. US dollar bills are folded into paper planes to form an Islamic geometric pattern rug.
