BODYWORK

FREMANTLE ARTS CENTRE

26 SEPTEMBER - 22 NOVEMBER 2020

Bodywork is an exhibition at Fremantle Arts Centre bringing together works from Australian artists Amber Boardman (NSW), Tarryn Gill (WA) and Kaylene Whiskey (SA). Through the use of soft sculpture, painting and video, the exhibition explores the human body and its role in self-expression and experimentation. An emphasis is placed on body modification, the cult of celebrity and female empowerment.

Gill's multi-limbed scultpures from her Limber series continue to demonstrate her background in competitive calisthenics and the use of materials pays homage to costuming seen in dance and musical theatre. The large sculptures lean on themselves, twisting into flexible poses highlighting the physical capabilities of the human body.

Alongside her Limber series, Show Girl is exhibited in Bodywork, displaying her childhood role models. The smaller scultpures of Show Girl provides a glimpse into Gill's childhood as it depicts her role models such as Miss Piggy, Jessica Rabbit, Dr Frank-N-Furter and the Rockettes.
