Circles of Life (2019) is in the NGV Collection

Tammy Kanat
Melbourne based Tammy Kanat’s work is vibrant and uplifting, consisting of hand-woven wall art, vessels and sculptures. A former jewellery designer, she embarked on her weaving journey in 2011. Tammy sees weaving as an ever evolving and timeless art form and an enchanting way to share the impact of her surroundings.

Circles of Life is a group of four works commissioned by the NGV that represent Kanat’s key thematic concerns. Throughout her career, Kanat has explored the representation of natural forms in tapestry – the concentric circles in these four works recall cut agate, living coral and aerial landscape scenes. Her work is also informed by an interest in colour theory, rare Japanese colour dictionaries, and the work of Bauhaus textile artist Gunta Stolz and modernist artists such as Sonia Delaunay.
