For her latest exhibition, Once I was a plant at Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Valamanesh has created her largest, most ambitious sculptural work a vastly over-scaled ceramic ‘necklace’, which trails from the wall onto the floor of the gallery. It’s a major work for Valamanesh with a genesis that was modest a pile of simple, faceted ceramic egg shapes, into which she had bored orifices. These forms remained on a shelf in the studio for some time, until a moment of clarity, when it became obvious that they needed to be linked together.
Entitled Morticia’s eggs, each incrementally larger, dimpled egg-form or ovum effectively an over-scaled bead is sheathed in a shimmering bronze glaze. Valamanesh has often described her works as non-didactic, as open to interpretation, but with this new and weighty work, the symbolism appears unmistakable.
