Pulse (Synchromy in green minor) references the Sydney modernists whose studies in Berrys Bay linked colour, music and well-being. It was in Berrys Bay that my mother’s family salvaged old ships, providing both home (as it was disassembled around them) and income throughout the Depression. The ‘pigments’ for this work are also a form of salvage, discarded anodised aluminium picnic cups. This quintessential material of modernism, with its reflective and pulsating qualities, appears almost illuminated, referencing in particular the green light at the end of the jetty in The Great Gatsby(1926) and shipping signals and the maritime more generally.
