A Powhiri or Welcome ceremony is taking place between a group of Islanders and the crew of the endeavour. Captain Cook and Joseph Banks are being guided by Tupaia, who replies to the Chief on their behalf - he has an understanding of the protocols and language. The local people think the endeavour belongs to Tupaia because he is acting as a leader. Two Arioi are practising, they often travelled and performed. The Turtle Tribe are wrapping gifts of fish ready for barter at a later time.
