Floating fissure (2020) depicts a broken navigational buoy and a piece of fossil coral. These objects, among others, were found by Pluta while researching and diving off Yonaguni in Japan. Made on location, and in response to the flotsam she found scattered and wedged between volcanic rock formations, Pluta brings into focus this normally anchored spherical shape, now shattered, alongside a piece of natural gemstone. Both artefacts drifted with ocean currents and serendipitously fell between the enclaves along the shoreline. In this photograph, Pluta has carefully composed an image that draws on their fragmented contours, which mirror one another through the fracture speaking to their physical and material composition.
